I lost my way but saw the light!

Returning recently from Manchester and my scheduled meeting with our group of aspiring CILIP Fellows and our mentors, I found time at last to reflect on my recent progress on this arduous quest for professional recognition.

Firstly, I was reminded of the value of our supportive group of allies in the cause of Fellowship.  Before each of our meetings I wonder whether there is much point attending.  I often reflect that I haven’t made much progress, haven’t much to share, or don’t have any questions to ask.  Yet such is the support, enthusiasm, willingness to contribute, share, and advise in the group that by the end of the meeting I leave with my “Fellowship Zeal” Level restored to maximum and plans in place for the next step on the journey.  Definitely a worthwhile use of a few hours.

My second reflection is on how I so easily lost my way with preparing evidence. The importance not just of having mentors, but of sharing documentation with them throughout the process for advice and suggestions.  In this case I was preparing evidence relating to my personal development against the PKSB and had written the reflections and documentation against meeting organisational instead of personal objectives.  Easily remedied but good to catch early so that minimal time is wasted concentrating on the wrong area.

Learning Points:

1)      It’s great to pursue Fellowship in a Fellowship if you can!
2)      Bombard your mentor with documents from early on so that you can get feedback and adjust your tack if necessary.
